Step 1: Secure Your Sticks
Lay two sticks across each other to form an X. Using your yarn, wrap several times around the center where the sticks cross. Wrap in one direction a few times, then switch directions and wrap a few more times until the sticks feel sturdy and do not slide around.
Step 2: Begin Weaving
Without cutting your yarn, start weaving your mandala. Wrap the yarn once around one stick, then bring it across to the next stick and wrap around that one. Continue moving in the same direction around the mandala, wrapping once around each stick as you go. As you continue, a woven pattern will begin to form.
Step 3: Change Colors
When you are ready to switch colors, cut your current yarn, leaving a short tail. Tie the end of your new color securely to the end of the old color with a small knot. Trim any excess if needed, then continue weaving with the new color. As you weave, the knot will become tucked into the mandala and help keep your colors secure.
Step 4: Add Beads
To add beads, thread them onto your working yarn before continuing to weave. Slide a bead down the yarn to the spot where you would like it to sit, then continue weaving as usual. Add as many beads as you like throughout your design. If the beads are difficult to thread, use a darning needle to help.
Step 5: Finish Your Mandala
When your mandala is complete, tie the end of your yarn securely around one of the stick ends. Trim any excess yarn. If you'd like, you can decorate your mandala further by adding bows, ribbons, tassels, feathers, or other embellishments to the stick ends.
